In the midst of the India-China tensions, 118 Chinese developed apps got banned from mobile markets. These included popular platforms like TikTok and CamScanner. Although TikTok’s ban filled many hearts with pure and utter joy, it was not all sunshine for our gaming fans. The government banned a fan-favourite game, PUBG Mobile. Can PUBG Mobile make a comeback?
This shooter battle royale game had become somewhat of an epidemic in the Indian market. Everyone loved it. From younger kids to teenagers, the game became all the rage and as a result, got nearly 33 Million users in India. Its sudden ban made a lot of fans frustrated and even slightly enraged, maybe even you. However do not worry, the gaming gods have not abandoned us yet. That is to say, fans have some shred of hope for PUBG Mobile to make a comeback in India.
In a bid to re-enter Indian market the PUBG Corporation announced this Tuesday, that they are cutting all ties with Tencent Games. They also released a statement saying:
“PUBG Corporation fully understands and respects the measures taken by the government as the privacy and security of player data is a top priority for the company. It hopes to work hand-in-hand with the Indian government to find a solution that will allow gamers to once again drop into the battlegrounds while being fully compliant with Indian laws and regulations,”.
This occurred because Tencent Games was a Chinese company and was the deciding factor in PUBG Mobile’s ban. PUBG Corporation is a South Korean company and as a result all of their PC and Console versions still run fine. For the Indian mobile market, PUBG partnered with Tencent games to manage the franchise in India. Cutting ties with them opens up some possibilities for the ban to be lifted.
Above all, PUBG had announced that they were exploring different options to provide a safe gaming experience for their Indian consumers. In other words, they might be looking into getting a new Indian partner. This partner would help manage and franchise the game in India. If the publishing moved to India, it would better comply with the current Government policies. This would make the removal of the ban more likely. However, all this would ultimately depend on the Government to make the call. What do you think? Is there a chance for PUBG Mobile to make a dashing return? Let us know in the comments!
